Have you decided to bring a soft-eared, cuddly new fur baby home? Congratulations! Being a pet parent to a new puppy is such a special time — and one that deserves celebration and preparation.

To ensure a smooth transition for both you and your new pup, start preparing for celebratory “Gotcha Day” immediately. Bringing a new puppy home is like bringing home a baby! You need supplies, a veterinarian, potty training tools and so much more.

We’ve compiled a new puppy parent’s checklist, so you can get everything you need for a smooth transition and a happy future with your fur baby. Here are the 11 essential supplies you need for your new puppy.

1. Small Blanket

Changing environments can be a stressful transition for a puppy. If your pup is still with their litter, give your breeder a small blanket to place with the puppy and the mother. Then, when you pick the puppy up, take the blanket home with you! These familiar scents will ease their stress, reduce whining and comfort your new fur baby.

2. Nutritious & Tasty Food

Don’t forget to buy high-quality, nutrient-rich food beforehand! Wet food, kibble, and freeze-dried raw food are all good options for new puppies. Generally, puppies thrive on recipes with higher protein and higher fat.

When you’re choosing your new puppy's food, look for natural formulas that are developed by veterinarians and pet nutritionists. Highly digestible, nutrient-rich recipes will help your puppy get everything that’s good for them — and nothing that’s bad for them.

P.S. You might want to stock up on a few pawPairings Superfood Seasonings to help with transitioning food, tempt picky eaters and give your puppy a boost of vitamins!

3. BPA-Free Food and Water Bowls

Speaking of food, be sure to grab some BPA-free food and water bowls. Plastic bowls can irritate your puppy's mouth and cause acne or infections. We recommend stainless steel bowls with an anti-slip surface underneath.

4. Potty Supplies

One of the first things on a new puppy owner’s mind is potty training! House training is an involved process, and you’ll need lots of potty supplies to aid you in the journey. At bare minimum, you should have an effective stain and odor remover and poop bags on hand. Take these the day you pick up your pup, just in case! You might also want pawTree’s Oxy Shot for ultra-tough stains and a bag dispenser to make your walks easier.

The more information you have about the potty training journey, the easier it will be. Read our complete guide to potty training to prepare for your fur baby’s arrival.

5. Collar or Harness and Leash

Walks and leash training create opportunities for pet-parent bonding time. If you’re a city dweller without a backyard as a bathroom, leashes are an immediate must-have! When you pick up your dog, you’ll need a collar or harness and leash. Leather or nylon leashes will wear the best over time — and don’t forget a cute ID tag to signal to the world your pup is yours!

6. Cozy Bed

Fur babies thrive when they’re given their own safe space to cuddle up in. Whether your pet sleeps alongside you or in a crate, be sure to gather a thick, soft bed and a blanket or two to create the perfect cuddle nook. Plush toys are welcome!

7. Treats for Reward Training

When you’re potty training, leash training and command training your new puppy, you’ll need treats for rewards! Training and working with new puppies require giving quite a few treats, so look for tasty, highly motivating treats that are natural and filler-free. Some pups are picky eaters, so we recommend having a few flavors on hand until you figure out their favorite.

8. Gooming Supplies

Grooming is a big part of taking care of a new puppy. Establishing a grooming routine early will support your fur baby’s skin and coat health in the future.

You’ll need soap-free shampoos, nail clippers, paw balm to protect those tiny beans, a brush, and maybe even some tub toys! Keeping your puppy’s skin, coat, and nails healthy is an important part of being a pet parent.

You might even consider getting salmon oil for preventative skin and coat care. Adding salmon oil to your pup’s diet provides them with the Omega-3 and Omega-6 fatty acids they need to keep their skin healthy and their coat huggable as they grow up. It reduces excessive shedding, supporting healthy skin and coat. pawTree’s Wild Alaskan Salmon & Pollock Oil has over 15 heart-healthy Omega-3 and Omega-6 Fatty Acids, that work at a cellular level, supporting almost every function in your pet’s body.

9. Preventative Vitamins & Supplements

Just like we should take regular vitamins, regular supplementation will help your sweet puppy thrive now — and help prevent future health issues down the road.

The Core 4 supplement pack is a good place to start as a new pet parent. It contains Wild Alaskan Salmon & Pollock Oil for coat and skin health, Gastro Pro Plus for gut and digestive health, Joint Support Plus for joint health and CBD Mega to help reduce stress and discomfort.

We recommend working with your veterinarian to create a personalized supplement routine for your new fur baby!

10. Toys!

Having fun is a vital part of a puppy’s life. Play is stimulating, physica, and comforting for pups. Try and collect a variety of toys to welcome your pup into their new home. Treatsers and other puzzle toys are a particularly good option for puppies with extra energy.

11. A Vet You Trust

Just like kids need a good general practice doctor, puppies need a trusted veterinarian. Not only will your new fur baby need shots and annual check ups, it’s always better to have a veterinarian on hand in the case of an emergency.

And those are the essentials! If you want to buy everything in one place, check out pawTree’s Ultimate Puppy Starter Kit. With food, urine eliminator, poop bags and bag dispenser, treats and salmon oil, it has all the essentials. Plus, it’s bundled with pawPairings Superfood Seasonings and dental sticks for taking extra good care of your pet’s health. Smaller starter kits are also available here.

Bringing a new puppy home is such a special moment! We hope you cherish the time and enjoy having a cuddly new family member at home with you. Happy “Gotcha Day”!
